Martin Carthy live in Doncaster, 2013

21 May 2017

Here are three new audio clips from a live recording of Martin’s solo Roots Music Club gig at the Doncaster Deaf School on 29 November 2013. I’m posting them here on the occasion of Martin’s 76th birthday.

Two of the clips (My Son John and the interview) were previously unavailable whilst When I Was A Little Boy was included on a podcast from Jonti’s Roots & Acoustic Music Show on SineFM in December 2013. Jonti Willis conducts the interview and asked me to contribute to the Q&A so if you listen carefully you’ll hear my question to Martin at around 16:45 (there were no mics on the audience so the audio for these questions has been boosted and is audible but not always very clear).

Live sound for all the clips was by Stuart Palmer and the photographs are by me.

The full podcast including most of this gig (minus the interview) is here:

Oh, and Happy Birthday Martin!

Martin Carthy and Martin Simpson have been friends and have worked together for many years, most notably in the The Four Martins quartet (aka ‘Martins 4’). They have also played the occasional – very occasional – gig together over recent years. Roots Music Club in Doncaster have been trying to get their schedules to coincide for several months and were finally able to get them together on the same night on 1 July 2016. Here are a few shots from that gig…

#MC50+ Martin Carthy: Live in Yorkshire, 2012

1 January 2016

Posted by Kevin Boyd, 1 January 2016

As an addendum to my 2015 #MC50 posts and a thank you to everyone who has supported this site during the last year by commenting on my posts or by sharing and retweeting my videos and comments on Facebook and Twitter I’m posting a bonus clip just in time for the new year. Or rather, to keep things more manageable I’m splitting the audio and posting two clips!

These two videos represent the entire first and second halves of Martin’s solo set at the now-defunct Rock at Maltby folk club in South Yorkshire in 2012. From some of the comments and emails I receive I’m aware that not everyone visiting this site has an opportunity to see Martin live on a regular basis (or ever, in many cases) so hopefully this will give a flavour of the live experience in extended form. The two clips are a fair representation of his recent solo sets, with a selection of songs spanning the entirety of his career, a handful of instrumentals and a couple of so-far unrecorded oddities

The recording is straight from the mixing desk so the sound quality is excellent (with very little audience audio) and I’ve left it more-or-less intact so you’ll hear complete introductions, the odd false start and Martin’s characteristic tuning up. In fact, you may notice that this is the gig from which I sourced the audio for my earlier video “Martin Carthy Tunes Up”!

Incidentally, the Rock at Maltby may be no more but it’s replacement in the form of the Roots Music Club, Doncaster is still going strong. Find details of their upcoming gigs here.

Enjoy the clips and have a great New Year.
