Norma Waterson single: Coal Not Dole

Posted by Kevin Boyd, 11 April 2013

In the wake of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s death and against the background of the news of a possible top-five UK single chart placing for the Wizard Of Oz soundtrack song “Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead”, Topic Records have today released a two-track download-only single by Norma Waterson.

Coal Not Dole b/w Hilda’s Cabinet Band

Norma CND

Of the two previously-released tracks, Coal Not Dole is Norma’s solo version of Kay Sutcliffe’s post-miner’s strike poem as featured on The Watersons’ Mighty River Of Song box set (a recording featuring the 1987 version of The Watersons is also available on Martin’s Carthy Chronicles box set).

Hilda’s Cabinet Band is credited here to Norma but is in fact the Watersons recording that first appeared on the Hard Cash compilation CD in 1990. The track was written by Lal Waterson and is her ‘tribute’ to the dubious achievements of Margaret Hilda Thatcher.
